Since the untouched photo of supermodel, Cindy Crawford, was leaked on the web Friday the social media praise has been overflowing. It’s like the lid on the pressure pot of female perfection just got released. All at once, every woman everywhere has been given unsaid permission of sorts (the social nod of approval) to love her body as-is with perfect imperfections.
This may sound silly to those of you who have rock hard self-esteem, but the majority of women out there no matter how amazing we may be, are still in the race to be everything, all at once, and beating ourselves up over everything we are not.
Speaking of amazing women, I just read an article this week by the phenomenal Elizabeth Gilbert on what reality really looks like for the woman who has it all. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway, this article is a must read; “The Best Thing You Can Do For Yourself — And All The Women Around You.”
Now back to the supermodels ‘a picture says a thousand words’ un-retouched photo.
It was originally attributed to be a campaign spread for the April 2015 issue of Marie Claire and is now understood to be a leaked photo from a December 2013 cover story in Marie Claire Mexico and Latin America magazine.
But, leaked by who?
That is the question.
Was the photo leaked by Cindy Crawford herself? If so, serious kudos, Cindy!
Or, was the photo leaked by someone else? And, if so, was their intent to expose the supermodel in some vulnerable way or put a brighter spotlight on the unrealistic expectations media creates for your average woman. You know the women I’m talking about; every real woman outside of the photoshopped magazines, camera-ready limelight’s, and box-office big screens. Real women. Real people.
The Good News: (Marie Claire said it best) “No matter where the photo came from, it’s an enlightenment—we’ve always known Crawford was beautiful, but seeing her like this only makes us love her more.”
The Other News: If it wasn’t Cindy who leaked the images, there are some serious privacy issues that can’t and shouldn’t be ignored. Not cool. So, not cool. Just because you have access, doesn’t mean you have the right to do with as you please. One word – R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
Now, back to the good news…
In Cindy’s words, “I really think—at any age—it’s about learning to be comfortable in your own skin, which is a lot easier said than done.”
In tribute to those superwomen, meaning the real women everywhere, getting comfortable in their own skin, redefining beauty, and empowering the next generation to do the same I’ve collected some of my top favorite pics that have inspired me and graced the headlines in recent past. Why? Because – WE ARE ALL BEAUTIFUL – and I think we should celebrate real beauty a little bit more!
Would love to hear what stories of real beauty have inspired you. Please, don’t be shy. Share your stories and pics below!!!
And, here’s a picture of me (behind the scenes) in a coffee shop writing this article. Yes, I’m totally in geek mode (and that’s my favorite mode to be in)…
